It was, as always pretty good. The convention is small and homey. It's a relaxing, not too serious atmosphere and a lot of fun.

However, it seemed to be more like the "furry and Dr Who" convention. There were A LOT of panels on those two subjects. Overwhelmingly so.

The panels we attended were also very good.

All in all, we believe Icon to be a small, relaxing convention, with no stress or worries, and we love that about it.

Our Panels / How They Went
« on: May 18, 2012, 05:12:55 pm »
Our panels went off relativel without a hitch. Due to some miscommunications, we were put in rooms that were not particularly favorable sometimes. However, all of our panels went well.

Dana was a bit spazztic with her teaching during out "ParaPara" panel. However, hopefully, those people left with more knowledge than they entered with.

Our chain reaction panel was our April Fool's jok. It was supposed to be wheel of fortune! Though a bunch of our audience cleared, it was still a fun time. Cody's bonus puzzels confused EVERYONE and we were more than happy to give them. We had a lot of laughs and a lot of fun.

Our Hetalia: What Really Happened? panel was fantastic. In short, we taught a lot of young people a lot of new facts. We all feel proud, knowing we taught thw younger generation something.

Our Hetalia: Fanversion vs Actual was hilarious. We had a lot o fun talking about pairings and headcannons. It was enoyable panel, and Dana even got proposed to by another cosplayer!

Our Legends Of The Hidden Temple panel was also a success. It was fantastic, and loads of fun. We built an obsticle course and did trivia. A little boy, maybe around seven years old was so determined to win, he actually threw the key at one of our temple guards! It was a lot of fun.

If you have any feedback, please feel free to let us know!

Artists Alley: Could it have been any lamer? / Honestly.
« on: May 18, 2012, 03:48:59 pm »
Honestly. What else can I say. Honestly. There was few artists. It was like walking into a room with half of those from 2010. As a lover of the artist alley, and a fellow struggling artist, I always look forward to AnimeNEXT's artist alley. I'm hoping 2012's won't be so disappointing.

However, the artists that did show up were fantastic. Dana was able to get hypoallergentic earrings and Hayley was able to get a sweatmark hair clip. There well made hats and fantastic prints.

Fingers crossed to a bigger artist alley next year!

Masquerade / Worth it?
« on: May 18, 2012, 03:39:37 pm »
The answer? Yes. Actually, this year's masquerade was a bit disappointing compared to other years. There were less good, well executed acts, and more haphazard ones.

However, this also proved to be an almost good thing. When there was a good skit, it was like "a diamond in the rough" sort of deal. When they were good, they were VERY good.

Watching some of these skits actually got you out of your seat to cheer. The good skits were phenominal and exciting.

All in all, the masquerade was worth the line. Even more though, we encourage ANYONE who thinks they can do it, to get on stage next year and do a skit! We wanna see some new faces up there!

Pissed Off Panda / How did it start and what is it all about?
« on: May 18, 2012, 02:31:36 pm »
What is Pissed off Panda you ask? Well!

It's an adorable, fun, hilarious comic about, you guessed it, a pissed off panda. The creator, a brilliantly hilarious man, who I have had the pleasure to talk to and reinterview on multiple occasions, got the idea when he was at the store. Amoung the stuffed pandas on a shelf, was one that stood out more than the others. This panda looked rather....pissed off. So, was the "Pissed off Panda" idea born.

I won't give any more spoilers, but I highly recomend this comic about Pissed Off Panda and his friend Pig Benis.

Wassup people?! Tis Dana, reportin' live from the NYC!

............

Ok. Now that I've put you through that sheer idiocy, I want you to know that I truly am excited. Very few things excite me, but when they do, I bounce off the walls.

Ken Levine is my her and idol. Honestly. Bioshock made me absolutely fall in love with his work. I waited in line for over an hour, but the thirty seconds I spoke to him, were possibly the best of my life.

I regret not wearing my little sister cosplay to meet him, I had rushed from a Hetalia photoshot and did't have time to change.

ANYWAY, back to the point. Meeting him. Smiling like a ditz, I shook his hand. Honestly, what shocked me was his British accent. He... isn't English. I questioned this, and he just laughed, saying he thought it would be fun. How cool is that?!He wasn't  angry about being there all day and having to deal with fans, he was upbeat and talkative. The best part was that I got him to sign my Little Sister apron. He was reluctant, because he thought he would ruin it, but I was insistant. Now it's my absolute favorite thing in the world.

He was so cool and nice. It was truly an amazing experience. Maybe, if I'm lucky, he'll be there again, and I'll have the guts to ask him for an interview. I regret not hugging him, or talking more, or anything of that nature really. I was so nervous and quite frankly starstruck. Besides, if I had talked too much, I pobably would have asked for his number...or kissed him...or something crazy like that! I didn't want to be another phycotic fan story. Though... it might have been worth it. Especially if I kissed him.

WELL. Putting my craziness aside, it was truly amazing, and a wonderful memory.

Dealers Room: Hot or not? / Dealer's Room
« on: April 18, 2012, 10:33:50 pm »
This dealers room was big...but big doesn't mean good. Now, if you were there soley for comics, it was a fantastic, overwhelming experience with lots of cool stuff. However, if you were there for the anime as I was, there was a much smaller room for our dealers, and less than an eighth of the dealers. I found this very upsetting, because I had such high hopes for the dealers, which were easily dashed.

Now, I have nothing against comics, in fact, I enjoyed the dealers room greatly. It was fun, and I found lot's of things to buy. Generally, the dealers were friendly, and there were high spirits all around. It was overcrowded, and many of the people around me had no manners, bbut my biggest complaint was the trafffic jam a cosplayer caused because people kept stopping to take pictures of him. While I appreciate his hard work, he chose a terrible spot... needless to say this cosplayer was one of our writers, Cody.

The biggest fun, for us at least, was the screaming booth, and the dancing game. Though difficult to navigate and very skimpy on the anime, I did enjoy the dealers room and can't wait for next year.

"Theres only one word I can think of to describe this convention. BIG. Oh. My. God. Wave upon wave of people came toward me as I ran to get to my interviews. It was impossible to get through the mobs! And the security workers- UHG, don't get me started!" -Dana

"That adventure time blowup  was so cool! I really wanted to check out some more stuff, but I kept getting stopped for pictures!" -Cody

"Went "Broku" man, it was awesome. Lost m voice, which sucked, but my sign about going "broku" to get hugs got me more hugs than the 'free hugs' girl next to me!" -Scott

Overall, this rather large conventiion was a good, but stressful time.

It was crowded. So crowded you could barely move. However, it was overcrowded with good reason. You could walk around the dealers room for hours- Dana even got lost a few times! Waiting on line for a panel? That's another hour and a half right there at least. However, you could relax once you finally sat in the panel, and it was always, from our experiences, worth the wait.

When you were finally worn out, you could relax and watch some Adventure Time at their giant display.

Though a bit unorganized, autograph sessions didn't disappoint. The lines were quick, the memories precious, and meeting these wonderful people was a once in a lifetime experience.

All in all, this convention is a must. It's fun and bustling. Just tons of fun.

Our Panels / How They Went
« on: April 18, 2012, 08:59:00 pm »
Not to praise ourselves, but we rocked! Videogames We Love To Hate was, as always, a huge success. We had good debates going, and a lot of strong opinions.

Jeapordy was, in short, a disaster. They booked two panelist groups in the same room...at the same time. However, we share dthe space cheerfully, having a fun game with a huge crowd of people. It was tons of fun.

Capture the flag was...a failure...sorta. It was so iincredibly fun, and it was amazing, even if we had to play in the rain. Unfortunatly, we were forced to stop in the face of lightning...but not before several attractive guys took off their shirt because they were sweating from the game. Which made Dana very happy.

However, Musical Chairs Plus Villians really stole the show. It was fun and quirky, and let everyone reconnect with their childhoods. Cody got really into it, running, jumping, fighting over seats. The battle for the last chair was near violent! It was quite fun.

"It's just Icon" / Why?
« on: April 18, 2012, 08:39:13 pm »
"It's just Icon". That's the phrase our writers Cody and Dana have adopted. But why? It's a family orientated, local convention that we've all attended for years. So why on Earth would our motto be "it's just Icon"?
The answer is simple. It's because it's a small, local convention. There aren't many cosplayers, and when there are, from my experience, they're either terrible, store bought, inaccurate, or simple. I honestly don't mind that, I really, truly don't. In fact, I actually embrace it. Those cosplayers are the cosplayers of the future. They're not very experienced, but with time, they'll blossom into cosplayers that people will stare at in awe, I have faith in that. However, as slightly more advanced cosplayers, we get bored with that. It was awesome when we were young. When I was a little Narutard, I went to my first Icon decked out in a Kiba cosplay....wearing sneakers instead of sandals, the wrong colored dog, and an abundance of energy and boundless excitement. However, now that I've gotten passed (way passed) that stage in my life, where I'm young and new to it, vulnerable to get swept into the big fandom, I find that the excitement of Icon cosplay has diminished. Cody and I (Dana) have taken a tack to being lazy with our Icon cosplay. I knew my dress had to be altered to be accurate, and Cody knew his armor needed repairs...but instead we went and got pizza, saying "it's just Icon". Upon attending the convention, we were right that people still found our cosplays fantastic, even if we saw inaccuracy.

So for us, "it's just Icon" is a way of justifying our laziness with our cosplay.

But what else is it?

Something always goes wrong with Icon. However, not because of the convention, but because of the weather. It rains, or it's super hot, or evevn super cold. It's.... "just Icon".

It's become a sort of slogan to describe our home convention. "It's just Icon" has it's insulting implications, but for us, it's also a way of returning "home". It's our home convention where we can be lazy and we don't care about appearing to be the perfect cosplayers and con goers. We're more ourselves, because  "it's just Icon."
